History of Megha Industries Uganda
Upon the expulsion of Indians by the late President Idi Amin Dada, Megha Industries (U) Ltd. Chairman, Dr. Shiraz Meghani and his entire family were among those who fled Uganda with nothing except clothes on their backs. After getting to Nairobi, he started exporting second-hand clothes into Zaire (now Democratic Republican of Congo) before later moving to Canada. He returned to Uganda in 1980 and started dealing in used clothing until 1993.
In 1994, he was joined by brothers and a nephew and, together, they started Megha Industries Uganda Ltd to manufacture mattresses under the household brand name of Royal Foam. The company later ventured into the importation of high quality furniture from Asia under the brand name Royal Furniture and the manufacture of steel products under Royal Steel.
Now 21 years later, Megha Industries (U) Ltd has grown to be one of the largest conglomerates in East and Central Africa. It takes pride in having within its ranks some of the best household brand names in the manufacturing, construction, advertising, car dealership and hospitality industries.
